Anyone doing solar?

The more I learn about it, the less I like about it. The way it disables itself when the grid goes down seems like there should just be a way to switch off the grid when it goes down. The cost of batteries seems like the worst part.
Also, since battery backups are the real magic behind solar panels, why not just have a battery backup for the house? You can charge it during the year and when the grid goes out, you switch to it. My grid has not gone down longer than two days and it was a very rare occurrence.
And I think a portable generator will power portable appliances for less cost than a battery array.
I want to like solar panels and a battery array, but it doesn't seem to stack up against other emergency power systems.
