Where are the levels?
Where are the levels?
Hey guys, I want to start playing D1 and D2 again and have them all up and running. But now I just need the levels.
The tracker had a game of Minerva going today under D2 but no matter which minerva level I tried none of them worked. I tried the levels from http://www.enspiar.com/dmdb/ but nope, not one worked.
So, where do I get the levels at? There is a "link" on the tracker that leads to nothing so that is also useless.

Why doesn't it work?

Re: Where are the levels?
Check with the folks over at the DCL. They're really active in D1/D2, so that might have been one of their games, and they might have been using a variant of the level that's not on the DMDB yet.
Re: Where are the levels?
I'd figure the game was this one: http://retro-tracker.game-server.cc/arc ... nerva.html
Not sure what variant of Minerva was used, but somehow everyone seemed to have it regardless. And it's D2. Though... there are also only two people in the game (not counting Xamindar) whose pilot names I actually recognize. Doesn't look like DCL members...
Maybe it's one of the ones here? (I can't believe I'm linking this) http://pooterman.com/ftp/descent2/levels/

Re: Where are the levels?
Thanks for the tips guys.
Sirius, weird that it lists me in that game when I was never able to successfully join. But it must be the one.

Re: Where are the levels?
DMDB really only works for newer levels -- things that came out after 2011 or so. For an old classic like Minerva, you should be able to get it at Pooterman's: http://www.pooterman.com.
Unfortunately, Poot doesn't stock very *new* levels. I don't think he has anything that came out after about 1999.
Normally I'd send you to Descent Valhalla for levels from the Sirian era, but it went offline in 2014. I sent a note to Ryujin asking if I could have a copy of the level set to host on DCL, but got no response . . . so at least for the moment, if you're looking for an obscure level from the golden age of the game, you're actually kind of SOL!
There's one other place worth looking. The Rangers maintain a level pack with popular anarchy levels. You can find that here: http://descentrangers.com/WebContent/In ... =Downloads (You're looking for the Ranger Packs for D1 and D2). You should just get those packs, and then you'll be able to join most games.
In fact, if it's an open anarchy game, you're looking at, there's a 99% chance the level you're looking for is either in the Ranger pack or on DMDB. If it's neither of those places, you may just have to ask another pilot for it! Check on Mumble; usually a pilot or two from a given anarchy game is hanging out on Rangers Mumble (mumble://mumble.descentrangers.com:31393) while playing.

Re: Where are the levels?
Ah, yes, dfiles: that place that has all the stuff, but no way to find it without being given a link (or guessing it) thanks to GameSpy/IGN shuttering PlanetDescent.
But I suppose once you know one file's location, the rest are fairly logical; beats playing "guess the GUID" at least.

Re: Where are the levels?
Actually, Planet Descent is naviagable in the Wayback Machine, you just have to use the non-archived dfiles link to pull stuff down.
