weird display issue
So I had a weird display issue crop up this morning. When I bring up Newspapers.com and try to view an article, the screen goes black for a couple seconds, then comes back to a mostly white screen with a warning message about the display in the lower right corner for a couple seconds, then back to b...

Re: Lawn thread.
Have you had any problems buying extra Ego batteries? None of the big box stores like Lowe’s and even Ace Hardware can't get them in my area. Same thing goes for mom-and-pop hardware shops. I had to buy it off Amazon. yes. I did manage to find some from time to time at local hardware stores, but wh...

Re: Replacing desktop data drive
There's always something else, y'know! OK, so I pulled the "bad" 1.5 TB drive and swapped in the new 4 TB drive that I robocopied the data to. Good so far. So i went into disk management to reassign the drive letter (that went fine) but the new drive is now listed as "Disk 2". Is...

Re: Replacing desktop data drive
Well this is interesting. I installed WinMerge to do some folder comparisons between the old and the new drives after the robocopy. When I put the two Win7 Stuff folders in on my two existing 1.5 TB drives and compare them, it does display that it is scrolling through a list of files, all of them in...

Re: Replacing desktop data drive
Interesting. Haven't drilled into this before. However, it seems I have read and execute permissions on the "Win7 Stuff" folder, but still can't see what's in the folder. When I tried to add a permission for that I got this - [oh buggers -can't remember how to post an image] one window sai...

The mystery folder I have that won't show the file contents is called "Win7 Stuff". I may have created this folder - but maybe not.

Re: Replacing desktop data drive
Data copy project completed. I put the new 4TB drive in an enclosure, formatted it, then did a robocopy of the potentially failing 1.5 TB internal drive to the new 4TB drive. Took a while but went mostly smoothly - got hung up towards (what I presume was) the end of the robocopy with an Error 5; \Sy...

Re: Replacing desktop data drive
Bonus question from me. My original ssd for this system was 128GB (Samsung MZ-7PC128D). Would I get much of a boost out of imaging the ssd c drive and replacing it with say a 1TB Samsung 870 EVO Series (only about $100)? Or should I just wait since I really need to do a complete new build with Win 1...

Re: Replacing desktop data drive
Thanks. So robocopy is this thing, huh? https://adamtheautomator.com/robocopy/ I'm no expert, but not a total noob either, and I don't remember anything about robocopy. Sounds like a better approach. The two current 1.5 TB drives pretty much have the same data on them - I use them as duplicate backu...

Replacing desktop data drive
My current system, which I'll be replacing probably in the next year or so, has an SSD as the C drive and two other conventional hard drives. I'm getting some inklings that one of the data drive hard disks is reaching the end of its lifespan (CrystalDiskInfo). So I bought a (larger capacity) replace...

I find they engage my mind if the picture is interesting. I let my younger relatives help with the harder puzzles as their interest permits - I like them as they require patience and delayed gratification, and teach the younger folks some persistence, a virtue for their own lives.

I was walking out of one of the process wings at work the day before yesterday. After regular hours so the place was pretty empty. Re: How Many Coders Does It Take to Turn On a Lightbulb?
My dad bought a "smart" light control switch that used the cloud so you could use your cell phone or our amazon echos to turn it on or off. It only worked about half the time, congested the wifi, and ate up power because it had to keep its wifi going. Also we needed to borrow someone else...

Re: Home networking question; ethernet, powerline or ???
Well the hard part is done - getting one end of the ethernet patch cable down the wall from the attic to where the existing wall plate was. Turns out the cable line does come horizontally through a stud (at least one), so had to drill through a chunk of wood in the attic above where the wall plate w...

Re: Home networking question; ethernet, powerline or ???
I was wondering about the powerline thing, but was concerned with throughput compared to plain ethernet. Looks simple, but I've never used it before. I have been considering the long ethernet cable thing; from the attic I could run the line into a small hole in the wall in the bedroom's closet and j...

Home networking question; ethernet, powerline or ???
Hey folks. I've got another conundrum that I'd like to run past the resident brains here. I'm trying to help set up a network in a house. One bedroom on 2nd floor is where the Comcast m/n TC8503C gateway is located; it has one computer plugged into one of the 4 ethernet jacks on the back. Now I need...
